Reviews & Opinions

SUBURBAN VOICE #40, SPRING1997: A more metallic, sometimes darker take on the California punk sound. The songs from Killed By Faith, their sole studio album and with the most together-sounding lineup, are an effective blend of thrash power and heavier impulses, topped off by Tony's rant. The balance comes from assorted studio and practice-space demos . An early outtake, "No Sympathy," favors a rougher punk approach while "Blue Eyes That Kill" utilizes a chaotic, brooding arrangement as a backdrop for Tony's Darby-esque free-associative vocal. Not on the level of the Ads, but there are moments . The album's been unavailable for years, as well.

MATT AVERAGE, MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL, OCTOBER 1996: Yet another gem unearthed by the folks at GTA. This one is the complete recordings (the ones that survived), including live stuff, of the ABANDONED, the band Tony Cadena started after the original break up of the ADOLESCENTS. The music is along the same lines, but with a darker tone and a desperate urgency, not to mention a GERMS influence, musically and lyrically. As this band went along, their sound really began to develop and push the boundaries for the
time, while sticking to their 'roots', something most bands are or were not able to do. An excellent collection of stuff, and a reminder of the great sounds that came outta Southern California.
