Reviews & Opinions

PUNKY GIBBON: Now THIS is punk. I guess. The sole single from this mystery “group” does not feature any punk, nor rock even. Nor anything even blues-based. There’s no sleeve, except a plain white card one with a sticker on it reading, “ABSTRACT CRITIQUE: The Strange Band… WE AIM: To Challenge (Accepted Truths), To Destroy (Intolerance), To Provoke (Thought And Comment)”. The two the inserts are full of rants against punk (as fashion) and the music biz in general. The four songs listed are not present. Instead, the EP has the same two songs on both sides. They are ancient recordings of: a big band playing a song probably called ‘Fanny The Fan Club’, and a schmaltzy number crooned by a Bing Crosby type. The label on the latter side is misplaced so that when the needle reaches the end of the side it is forced back onto record with a loud thump, and continues to do so until you manually remove the thing yourself. This appears to be intentional. All very amusing, of course, but you wouldn't actually want to own it.

Additional Notes

In plain die-cut card sleeve, numbered by hand-stamp with small “The Strange Band” sticker on it. With stapled booklet and insert. No song details provided. If anyone can tell what the label calls the tracks on the B-Side, please contact me.
