Reviews & Opinions

PUNKY GIBBON: With just eight songs, the band's debut, co-produced by Posh Boy head honcho Robbie Fields, is more of a mini-album, featuring a third version of 'Bloodstains' (after the 1980 single and the Rodney On the Roq version), suitably nihilistic rants like 'Everything Turns Gray' and 'No Such Thing', and a fun version of the instrumental surf oldie 'Miserlou'. Produced with the minimum of fuss - a few overdubs, a bit of echo where needed, some handclapping - this poppy but punchy affair is one of the best punk (or otherwise) LPs of the decade.

ROBERT PAYES/IRA ROBBINS, THE TROUSER PRESS RECORD GUIDE, 1991: Pcture a band that combines the best elements of the Sex Pistols, the Ventures and early Blue Oyster Cult. Got that? Then you've got Agent Orange, a Fullerton, California trio who hybridized surf-twang sounds, smart-metal chops and punky drive. Living in Darkness is a short, concise collection of seven originals (like "Bloodstains") plus an appropriate memory-tweaker: the instrumental classic "Miserlou."

RECORD COLLECTOR, 1993: Wonderful [read full review here]

Additional Notes

The 1988 CD version contains seven of the LP cuts, substituting the LP version of 'Bloodstains' for the 'Rodney On the Roq' one. It also adds most of the Bitchin' Summer EP and an enjoyable (if minor) EP by fellow So-Cal chappies Symbol Six.

The 1992 CD adds various tracks, including all of the 1980 Bloodstains single and all of the 'Bitchin' Summer' EP, along with two cuts (15,16) issued as a single in 1990 but dating from this classic period. So, it's a comprehensive round-up of their early years except for the 'Rodney On The Roq' version of 'Bloodstains' and - correct me if I'm wrong - a short version of 'Pipeline' that was the B-Side of Everything Turns Gray.
