Reviews & Opinions

PUNKY GIBBON: With his backing group The Jabbers (partiy comprised of his brother Merle, with GG himself helping on drums under his real name Kevin), this is actually quite innocent sounding despite titles such as ‘Pussy Summit Meeting' and ‘Assface', which is as about as offensive as it gets. 'Don't Talk To Me' is pleasant enough, but its "natter natter natter" chorus is unbelievably lame (he even calls the offending lady a "twit"!), while '1980's Rock N Roll' could have been written by Van Halen! Though it rocks from start to finish in an Angry Samoans kinda way it doesn't make much impact and sounds incredibly naive.

IAN McCALEB, THE TROUSER PRESS RECORD GUIDE, 1991: All moral and artistic judgment aside, Allin is due some credit for managing to do what he's done with so much conviction for so long. GG's long and storied career began in 1978, deep within New Hampshire's rolling hills, when somebody foolishly fronted this Hookset, NH kook some green to press an LP. A decent though badly produced record, Always Was, Is, and Always Shall Be (which sold like hotcakes in Sweden) mixes a variety of influences most notably the Stooges and the Dolls, but also 1980-vintage punk and new wave pop into a fairly appealing rock sound. But Allin has a fatal weakness for extremely vulgar lyrics. How can a relatively straight song like "Unpredictable" be taken seriously in the vicinity of "Beat, Beat, Beat" and the fatuous "Pussy Summit Meeting"?

Additional Notes

The CD reissue comes with a totally inappropriate new sleeve and, just to make things worse, the songs have been sped-up. The LP was reissud in 1989 ina completely different sleeve by Black & Blue (cat no 006053X) with the following extra tracks: 'NYC Tonight', 'No Rules, 'A F**kup', 'Dead Or Alive', 'Gimmie Some Head' and You Hate Me & I Hate You'.
