Reviews & Opinions

PAUL CASTLES, PUNK LIVES #11, 1983: Dear Mary Whitehouse. Congratulations on winning your campaign against video nasties. [read full review here]

RUTH SCHWARTZ, MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL #11, JANUARY/FEBRUARY 1984: I thought their first few singles made them seem like silly Oi boys, but this album is so well done that it's given me faith in their ability to play gripping rock 'n' roll. They have an English skunk style with heavy metal overtones, but the gruff vocals, singalong choruses, and demented lyrics turn many of the songs into instant classics, especially "Degenerate".

RECORD COLLECTOR, 1990: I guess I must qualify as a member of the devious public, although I don't feel any different for it. The Blood don't sound very devious, though, as they wear their obvious influences on their sleeves for all to see - aspects of early Damned are dragged down by tired heavy metal riffs and combine to sound like New Model Army on a very off night. And the 'song' titles are so cliched, they lose any impact: 'Throttle Ya Blue', 'Sewer Brain', 'Gestapo Khazi', and so on. Anyway, readers who've been desperately tracking down original copies of this 1983 debut LP can rest at last.

Additional Notes

The vinyl version ois split into Sui-Side (tracks 1-5) and Homi-Side (tracks 6-11).
