Reviews & Opinions
MARK PAYTRESS, RECORD COLLECTOR, 1992: With a Malcolm Garrett sleeve and Martin Rushent at the mixing desk, this is the Buzzcocks' live album you might have wanted back at the end of the Seventies but which never appeared. Recorded live at the Hammersmith Odeon in March 1979, this set is an accurate representation of the group in concert, but the near-perfect execution of their recorded work makes this a perfunctory, rather than priceless release. By the time of this recording, more was demanded of the Class of '77 than the Buzzcocks were able to deliver, and their flawless live performance didn't provide the challenge that, say, Joy Division were able to provide. Entertaining Friends contains the hits and the album highlights, and will sit happily on the shelves of the completists, but compared with last year's Time's Up album of early demos, this archive find is decidedly run-of-the-mill. You're better off investigating the overlooked A Different Kind Of Tension album, which the band were working on at the time of these recordings.Additional Notes
