Reviews & Opinions

PUNKY GIBBON: This 3xCD box set is full of great music and is beautifully packaged and arranged, but for collectors also something of a damp squib. The majority of songs are culled from their first five albums, but there isn't much unissued stuff: three previously unavailable but not especially interesting songs (from 78, 80 & 81), some alternate mixes (including a six-and-a-half-minute version of 'Straight To Hell'), a couple of live cuts, and just two tracks from their famous original Guy Stevens demo. It makes a good introduction, nonetheless.

The vast majority of this set (even the live stuff) was subsequently issued as part of the Sound System box set. The following songs didn't make it, though: 'One Emotion', 'Every Little Bit Hurts (Previously Unreleased)', 'Red Angel Dragnet (Edited Version)', 'Ghetto Defendant (Edited Version)'.

Additional Notes

The original US pressing (pictured below) came in a long box with two booklets (the 64-page "Clash On Broadway", and "The Clash Lyrics"). The UK version, which wasn't releases until 2000, came in a standard three-CD jewel case and contained one booklet, "The Clash Lyrics". The 2000 remastered also came out in the US (in a long box).
