Reviews & Opinions

PUNKY GIBBON: Aided by Huey Lewis' uninspiring backing band Clover (calling themselves The Shamrocks), My Aim Is True is, considering its reputation as an unarguable classic, decidedly underwhelming in places. Clover, although competent, can't match Costello's vitriolic lyrics and intense delivery. Nick Lowe's production is a typical Lowe-job: brittle, tinny and full of echo. 'Mystery Dance' is irritating Rock n Roll in the style of our man's fatter namesake, 'Pay It Back' is weedy country rock. Yet despite all this it still packs a punch, and certainly has some of his best songs. (Oh, and the track timings states on the original UK LP are completely inaccurate - no doubt a typical Stiff wheeze.)

Additional Notes

For those who want the album album on CD without a billion bonus tracks, I would direct you to the digipak Hip-O release from 2007, which only has the one ('Watching The Detectives) and is be the same master as the Deluxe Edition.
