Reviews & Opinions

PUNKY GIBBON: Album No. 4 removes the combo even further from the realms of easy listening. As ever they avoid melody but things aren't exactly tuneless either. You could call them anti-melodic if you wanted to be a bit of a pseud, but in spite of the full-on assault, some of the choruses are really catchy. The record is split into two discs. The first is a "standard" studio set, each song interconnected with snippets taken from television programs, commercials, radio etc, usually reinforcing the stupidity of the general public, politicians and media. The production is likewise more cluttered, with the guitars cranked as loud as possible - apart from on two tracks - and all kinds of aural chaos in the background. 'Reality Whitewash', with its fake string section, is the high spot. The second disc, entitled 'Well Forked - But Not Dead' mixes very primitive early recordings, live recordings, spoken word interruptions, and the composite tape the band used before coming on stage. In all, a classic.

STEVE SPINALI, MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL #2, SEPTEMBER 1982: Two albums, one poster, and a splendid 28-page large format booklet (all in a sleek boxed set) seems all too much to digest - especially from England's most astute punk outfit, CRASS. The studio LP, ranging from unrestrained thrash to sophisticated post-punk, contains some of CRASS' most astonishing compositions to date; especially exciting are "The Greatest Working Class Rip-Off" and "Tribal Rival", two impassioned attacks on Oi violence, and the superbly written "Reality Whitewash", which exposes vicious sex stereotypes and roles. In addition to a delightful live LP, Penny Rimbaud's extensive article in the booklet provides an historical background for CRASS that's spellbinding, perceptive, and lyrical. This release is incredibly mandatory.
