Reviews & Opinions

PUNKY GIBBON: This is Crass' ultimate musical response to the Falklands conflict. Much less jovial than Sheep Farming, the album is comprised of Ignorant, De Vivre and Libertine talking and ranting over free-form, utterly unstructured improvised noise. And if it's not improvised, this is proof that they have no musical acumen whatsoever. Like Black Flag's jazz-jams, this is really boring. In amongst the audio misery are two good songs: 'What If I Told You To Fuck Off' has to be a parody of their early recordings, it just HAS to be. 'What Will You Do? What Will You Say?' sounds like Rod, Jane And Freddy armed with a Bakunin pamphlet and a piano. It's lovely. Unfortunately, the other 40-minutes defies entertainment on every level.

STEVE SPINALI, MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL #7, JULY/AUGUST 1983: This is a profoundly different sort of CRASS album. It counterpoints a thrashy, wild instrumental backdrop with an extensive lyric essay attacking the politics of power, nuclear escalation, organized religion, and especially our sheep-like passivity which allows it all to happen. CRASS apparently feels that their message hasn't sunken in yet-- hence the numbing music and emphasis on words--and they obviously hope that action will replace boredom and endless posing in the contemporary punk scene.

OLD SHATTERHEAD, PUNK LIVES #7, 1983: No Crass, I won't. [read full review here]
