Reviews & Opinions

RED STARR, SMASH HITS, FEBRUARY 5-18, 1981: As one who had just about written off the Gang Of Four, this comes as a pleasant surprise. The band have lost none of their hard hitting approach on political awareness during their lay-off and have also improved technically. Yet though the familiar sound is here - the blazing metallic guitar, the heavy funk bass, the busy solid drumming, the chanting vocals - they still opt for punch rather than melody, and lyrical strength is no substitute. Thus this album, welcome and well produced as it is, still doesn't match that first brilliant EP on Fast Product. But buy this for its undoubted strengths anyway. (7-and-a-half out of 10).
