Reviews & Opinions

JACK RABID, TROUSER PRESS: The songs on 'Murder in a Foreign Place' aren't overly political; the music resembles early Brit-punk (Generation X, Sham 69) in spots. By tempering fierce enthusiasm with clear organization (although the mix buries Conley), relatively leisurely tempos and musical coherence, M.I.A. rises well above the crowd.

JEFF BALE, MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL #14, JUNE 1984: When I first heard this, I was a bit disappointed, but after only a couple more listens, those distinctive M.I.A. characteristics clearly emerged--a tight, powerful instrumental attack, hooks galore, flashes of hot guitar work (especially on "Used to Know Me"), plaintive, evocative lead singing, intelligent themes, and some haunting background vocals (in "Modern Way" and "Boredom is the Reason"). So you'd be a jerk not to go out and buy it, you know?
