Reviews & Opinions

JOHNNY WALLER, SOUNDS, 1983: A massively impressive calling card....mostly, The Mob disregard the furious thrash punk of their contemporaries, preferring to convey their feelings of despair, fear and disgust via a loping, aggressive mid-paced punk which sounds like a Clash/Buzzcocks hybrid played at half-speed. Sounds weird, but works brilliantly! 'Let The Tribe Increase' is terrifyingly abrupt in its fierce confrontation. There are no jokes, no happy endings. In the end, there is only music...and hope. And The Mob.

STEVE SPINALI, MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL #6, MAY/JUNE 1983: After two serviceable singles, the MOB must be congratulated for compiling a subtle yet affecting album's worth of political pop ditties. This record may be inconsistent melodically, but the fourteen songs here have strong lyric components and a simple instrumental approach reminiscent of the early MEKONS. This may not be thrash, but it is the kind of material that definitely grows on you. Good stuff.

PUNKY GIBBON: Take your pick of the reissues. The Broken Rekids version has a bunch of rare singles sides, but all (including the LP itself) are dubbed from slightly scratchy vinyl. The 2011 version has less bonuses but is apparently remastered from the master tapes.

Additional Notes

The Broken Rekids CD mistitles the following tracks: 'Cry Of The Morning' as 'Cry Of A Morning' and 'Raised In A Prison' as Prison'. Of the bonus tracks, 'Mirror Breaks' should be 'The Mirror Breaks'.
