Reviews & Opinions

PUNKY GIBBON: On something of a roll after the punchy Too Tough To Die, Animal Boy is even better. I believe I am alone in thinking this, but let me explain. It features one of their greatest songs, an attack on Ronald Reagan which was first issued in 1985 as 'Bonzo Goes To Bitburg' but here re-titled 'My Brain Is Hanging Is Upside Down' (because Johnny was a Republican and didn't really like his idol being slagged off). Again, Dee Dee gets two very fast and pretty hilarious numbers to sing on - 'Love Kills' (a song about Sid and Nancy which was not included in the film of the same name) and the hardcore 'Eat That Rat' - while Joey sings about 'Crummy Stuff', apemen, drinking problems, the time 'Somebody Put Something In My Drink' (actually Richie's drink), and his position in society ('Freak Of Nature', 'Mental Hell'). PLus, there's a lovely ballad ('She Belongs To Me') and a zippy power-pop number ('Something To Believe In'). The production is pretty slick, with keyboards here and there, but the songs are great and it's all splendid. As usual.

Additional Notes

'Something To Believe In' is a slightly different mix to the single version.
