Reviews & Opinions

PUNKY GIBBON: The early 80s was a tough time for the group, as they found themselves unable to extend their parameters to their own (or their critics') satisfaction. Recorded in summer '79 but not released until the following February, End Of The Century was produced by Phil Spector, and given that the Ramones had a love for his 60s girl groups the union should have worked, but their recording techniques were so fundamentally opposed to each other that the end result is somehow tense (at one point Spector pulled a gun on them), heavy-handed, and muddy. The strings 'n' all version of 'Baby I Love You' was a bone of contention for the group and their fans, but to these ears sounds sublime, with yearning, cracked vocals; and 'Do You Remember Rock 'N' Roll Radio?' should also have went Top Ten. But there's an overall air of impasse about it all: 'The Return Of Jackie And Judy', 'Chinese Rocks' and 'This Ain't Havana' look backwards, not forwards. Still, it's a Ramones record, and it is basically a noisy rock 'n' roll LP, so buy it: it's still very good. The CD reissue adds a slew of demos, which present some of the LP cuts in basic Ramones tradition.
