Reviews & Opinions

GREG PRATO, ALLMUSIC: The Saints remain one of the more underrated punk outfits from the mid- to late '70s. Perhaps geography had something to do with it (after all, not a lot of A&R reps from the U.S. were racing to Australia to sign punk bands at the time), because The Saints have issued some of rock's all-time classics, specifically their debut, 1977's (I'm) Stranded. If you're looking for a Saints compilation that digs deeper than just the standards, the 1999 double-disc Big Hits from the Underground is a solid career overview. The title track from (I'm) Stranded kicks things off -- and remains one of punk's all-time great tracks -- which is then followed by such other gems as "No Time," "Swing for the Crime," and "Know Your Product." Overall, Big Hits from the Underground is a fine summary of The Saints -- sloppy garage rock that's evened out by attitude and aggressive performances.

Additional Notes

The four bonus tracks were recorded live on the ABC radio show 'Live At The Wireless' during the last Saints tour in Australia. Issued on vinyl as Seventy Seven Ninety Nine - Big Hits From The Underground, with six songs fewer (the four bonus tracks, 'Fire & Brimstone ' and 'Before Hollywood').
