Reviews & Opinions

CLIFF WHITE, SMASH HITS, JULY 12 - 25, 1979: I rate Jimmy Pursey as one of the most upfront, sincerely motivated characters to emerge out of the British '70s new wave movement. Unfortunately, his musical ideas aren't always as strong or entertaining as his own personality. This is a forceful, fairly exciting 'cockney'-punk rave-up but the song is routine terrace-type chanting. Still, at least it's unpretentious, street-level British rock, which is more than can be said for: [a review of PiL's Death Disco follows].

PUNKY GIBBON: This A-Side is from The Adventures Of The Hersham Boys: the 7" is a special edit, while the 12" is just the LP version with an extended jam climax, full of silly ad libs and much mucking about. Both are great. The rowdy live performance comes from early '78, and comes complete with bleeped out swearing and crowd violence. At one point a clearly upset Pursey interrupts one fracas thus, "Oi, oi, come back. Oi, listen, listen...I fucking mean it now, I've had enough, right. If you wanna do that there's plenty of fucking fields to go and scrap with each other right?. Come down here he won't touch yo. PACK IT IN, I MEAN IT, FUCKING GIVE OVER!!" Which beggars the question: if Sham were so upset about continued fighting at their shows, why issue this recording rather than one without incident (or edit the incident out)? A typical Sham mixed message then.

Additional Notes

The full concert from which the live tracks were taken has been bootlegged as Live In London 1978, and also issued as part of the United double CD set.
