Reviews & Opinions

PUNKY GIBBON: Not a bad single, but a slight step down in quality from previous efforts. The A-Side is a sharply observed critique of nationalism and its uglier kid brother racism, but the bite is tempered somehow, probably by the clean production more than anything. The flip is a lengthy cover of an old reggae song, this time being more reggaefied than their punked-up rendition of 'Johnny Was'. Worth getting certainly, but unexceptional.

DAVID HEPWORTH, SMASH HITS, JULY 24TH, 1980: I'm told Stiff Little Fingers are a grand bunch of lads. Why they have to mess up would could be a beautiful relationship by making records I don't know. The front of this double feature is their usual rumpled thrash with Jake Burns' voice curdling into a gravelly rasp as soon as it's required to retain a note for more than two seconds. 'Mr Fire Coal Man' is an old reggae song which is mainly notable for some of the slackest drumming ever to attempt to keep up with the rest of the band.
