Reviews & Opinions

PUNK GIBBON: Again, on LP, SLF prove inconsistent: this contains the usual mix of spot-on hits and misses. With meatier production values, horn sections, more restrained singing, and lyrics that are more subtle but still angry, the band is still clearly a punk band, but reaching out for less narrow-minded ways of expressing ideas and playing music. Kicking off with an almightily rockin' version of 'Roots, Radicals, Rockers And Reggae', they subsequently try their arm at personal pop ('Just Fade Away'), political pop ('Silver Lining'), rockabilly (Cluney's 'Gate 49'), reggae ('Safe As Houses', 'The Only One'), corny punk ('Kicking Up A Racket', another poor Cluney effort) and a very rocky instrumental (the title track). SLF are on more solid ground with the emotional 'Piccadilly Circus', the true story of a senseless stabbing, which is harrowing. Occasionally described as the Fingers' London Calling, this comparison doesn't really hold true, but it's very entertaining and lively nonetheless.

RED STARR, SMASH HITS APRIL 16, 1981: A small progression here. While managing to retain most of the raw excitement, SLF have toned down the frenzy in favour of a mite more adventurousness musically. This, while showing off their good, tuneful songs to better effect, does also tend to expose their shortcomings, lyrics especially. Unfocused away from Belfast, they stand exposed as either relentlessly clever word plays (ill at ease with the band's natural passion) or cringeworthy naive cliches (doors in my mind?). Still, their best LP since their first and a healthy pointer for the future. (7 out of 10).
