Reviews & Opinions

PUNKY GIBBON: Following two stellar singles on their own Rigid Digits label, 'Inflammable Material' cemented SLF's status as amongst the most important of the second wave of punk bands. Full of embittered, frustrated, angry and defiantly scathing punk dogma over a backdrop of rawly produced blazing guitars, the passionately raw-throated Burns is positively furious throughout. Not exactly intellectual, it's still a lot smarter than Sham 69, and the tinny production helps. Both singles are included (in a superior versions), as are many more songs which have been promoted to classic: 'Barbed Wire Love', 'State Of Emergency', 'Rough Trade', 'Law And Order', 'White Noise' etc. An eight-minute version of Bob Marley's 'Johnny Was' is an emotional steamroller of immense proportions, their equivalent to 'Police And Thieves'. Only the dismal closer 'Closed Groove' - which sounds like early Spizz - prevent this being perfect.
