Reviews & Opinions

PUNKY GIBBON: Surprisingly, 'Now Then…' is a whole-hearted return to the form (if not sound) of the first album, offering 11 songs of equal, high quality. The paint-stripper guitars are largely absent, but for once it seems like the group are going in a direction that is entirely their own, side-stepping white reggae and ragged punk to pursue their own brand of intelligent, articulate, mature and thoughtful rock/punk. Having said that, they're not averse to pumping up the juice, as on a nifty version of 'Love Of The Common People', and originals like 'Falling Down', the haunting 'Bits Of Kids' and the wry 'Welcome To The Whole Week', which appears to sing the praises of unemployment. The LP's jewels in the crown are the lovely but biting acoustic ballad 'The Price Of Admission' and the closer, 'Is That What You Fought The War For?'. A great record. Even better: initial copies came with a big colour poster.
