English musician, born in Ankara, Turkey, 1952:

No introduction is needed for the one-time singer, guitarist and beating passionate heart of The Clash (1976-1986). Prior to The Clash he played in The Vultures (1973-1974), whilst living in Newport, Wales, before moving to London, where he formed fiery pub rockers The 101'ers (1974-1976). After The Clash split in 1986 he did solo work, acted in Alex Cox films, did work as guest guitarist and then stand-in lead vocalist for The Pogues, and eventually formed Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros (1999-2002), who recorded three LPs which didn't rock anywhere near as hard as The Clash ever did. He died in 2002 of a heart attack, aged 50.
