Reviews & Opinions

JULIE BURCHILL, NME, APRIL 1978: I don't know about you, but I'd rather sit through a Nick Lowe album than listen to the latest lax waxing by yet another 'New Wave' American band, with their selfish fantasies of individual reality and desperate desires for the root of all evil. Well, why do you think Television persist in putting out records stamped on red or green plastic? Is Tom Verlaine's creative genius burning? At least Kiss gives you a free sheet of transfers. Still, as the Roman Emperor who hid his money in his chamber-pot was fond of saying, "Non olet". Money doesn't smell -- not like this record anyway. Drag yourself past the 'literary' sleeve -- they're not a pretty band and Tom faces up to baldness with bad grace -- and what you get is more acid-casualty-type gibberish in the tradition of "Marquee Moon".

PUNKY GIBBON: Belying its title, Adventure is more restrained but hardly the failure many critics at the time considered it to be. It’s actually hard to believe that this still gets slated in some quarters. 'Foxhole' and 'Careful' are superbly crafted, tense and even humorous numbers that, with a less peculiar-sounding singer, might have been considered commercial. (The likewise high-minded Talking Heads were, after all, on the verge of stardom.) 'Days' and 'Carried Away' are probably the loveliest songs to have come out of the whole punk scene, with haunting imagery and some of Verlaine’s best vocals. Finally, 'The Dream's Dream' is as astonishingly beuatful extended jam that ends the album on a suitably ambigious note. 'Adventure' itself was intended for the record but left off due to time constraints, and didn’t see the light of day until Rhino’s digitally remastered version came out on CD in 2003, along with two alternate versions of ‘Ain’t That Nuthin’’, one taken from an edited promotional single, the other an early stab.
