Reviews & Opinions
PUNKY GIBBON: An absolute, unmitigated, no-bullshit classic, an unusually mature and assured record that had all the energy of the punk but was wholly its own beast. The title track is ten minutes of heaven, from its sparkling yet ominous intro through to its cyclic finale; while ‘Prove It’, ‘Venus’ and ‘See No Evil’ lend a poetic slant to an off-kilter pop sensibility. The 2003 remaster features a 10:47 version of the title track instead of the 9:58 "proper" version i.e. the one everybody heard in 1977 when they played the LP. I always preferred the shorter version, which faded out as the band went back to the opening motif, giving the impression that the song could be playing forever. The longer version has a normal ending with a climactic finale. Boo. If you want to get the shorter version on CD, I direct you to the non-remastered CD from 1990 (still sounds pretty good, though).
ZIG ZAG: This album is a complete classic, though it might not be a favourite with the record buying public and anyone less hip than me. This is not an albums for solicitors' clerks to leave lying on their smoked glass coffee tables to impress friends. It's an album of great artistic significance and honesty. It could and should be enjoyed by everyone...not just those riding the crest of the new wave. Don't delay...buy it today.
Additional Notes
The original LP version of 'Marquee Moon' fades out at 9:58. The 2003 reissues have a 10:47 version with a "proper" ending. The 1990 has the shorter version. The packaging on the US Rhino CD is essentually the same as on the European.Images
