Reviews & Opinions
PUNKY GIBBON: Given a) the exciting live shows and b) the long wait, this single came as a major disappointment. The A-Side is a semi-acoustic throwaway with prominent accordion and highly camp vocals. "Young Parisians are so French/They all love Patti Smith". I mean, I like it, but it's hardly explosive, and then more you hear it the more boring it gets. 'Lady', however, is a prime slice of pacy 'n' prurient punk noise, matching great lyrics with a great tune. It began an Ants tradition carried throughout their career: pop on side one, punk on side two as a "thank you" to their fans.
MARK ELLEN, SMASH HITS JAN 8-21, 1981: Remember the story? Decca snapped up the ailing Ants in '78 as a kind of token "art/punk" act. 'Young Parisians' was their war-cry, a decadent, sexually ambigious hunk of Cafe Society sleaze that skydived into the great vinyl sea and sank like a ton of bricks. Two years later and - hopla! - the nouveau Buccaneer/Apache mode is launched causing the now ubiquitous Adam to be hailed (rightly) as a big cheese in the fashion/pop interface. If you didn't buy it then, don't bother now. It's just the memory of a band once fading out and record company still cashing in. Avoid like the plague.
Additional Notes
It is assumed that the sleeve credit "This record is dedicated to Rudolph Schwazrgoggier" should actually read "This record is dedicated to Rudolf Schwarzkogler", what with him being the Austrian edgy performance artist who was name-checked a few other new wave/punk/industrial acts at the time.
