Reviews & Opinions

BEN WEASEL, REISSUE LINER NOTES: 'Anthem For A New Tomorrow' is my favourite Screeching Weasel record. From songwriting and production to performance, sequencing and art, it's the first record I made that worked exactly the way I wanted it to. The idea was to create something that sounded like out earlier stuff filtered through an agitated, overloaded mind; something sitting there a little unpleasantly between a sugar high and a crank hangover. Or to out it simply: the musical version of a panic attack. The album did very well out of the gate and continues to sell well, and I'm extremely pleased that hardcore fans of the band often cite 'Anthem' as their favourite Screeching Weasel record. Me too.

DAN VAPID, REISSUE LINER NOTES: Great record. My favourite SW record. i had only co-writtem one song but to suggest anything else would have ruined the mix. I learned half of this record in an afternoon. Taking influence from Pink Flag record by Wire, 'Anthem' was lyrically, musically, thematically a great flow of songs from start to finish. A great body of work. Classic.

MIKE DARONCO, ALLMUSIC: It seems that Ben Weasel and company have matured a great deal upon the release of 'Anthem [sic] For A New Tomorrow'. Now playing as a four-piece, Screeching Weasel aren't slowing down with their continual aggravations toward everyday life and all-around stupid people. Songs like 'I'm Gonna Strangle You' and 'Rubber Room' continue in that tradition, but what's different are the callings for a social change on 'A New Tomorrow' and the lack of individuality in American culture with 'I, Robot'. Not as raw and punchy as their previous album, Wiggle, but with the slick production and ability to jam keyboards in the mix without sounding "artsy," Screeching Weasel remain one step ahead of the game.
