Reviews & Opinions

CAROLINE BLASE, RECORD COLLECTOR, 2006: The Banshees were a fairly prolific sessions band and, as such, it's possible to trace their musical development quite clearly over the nine-year period covered by this CD. Some highlights would be the entire 1977 session (along with the '78 session, it formed the musical blueprint for The Scream), which displays a manic punk energy absent from their debut album. There's also Placebo Effect from 1979 and a sparse, echoing Lands End from 1986. The 1981 session displays the band at their glorious best. The session treatment doesn't always work in 1986 where, with the exception of Lands End, Tinderbox's darkly slick, embellished songs seem hollow and flat.
