Reviews & Opinions

PUNKY GIBBON: Compilation of both sides of their single, live recordings from 1977, 1978 and 1979, and unreleased studio sessions. Throughout, the singing (by Lucasta and Xenia), is amiably off-key and there are some decent tunes ('Hearts In His Eyes' for one) but these girls are peddling the lamest kind of retrogressive new wave, indebted to 60's girl groups and Phil Spector. On the few occasions where they kick up any kind of sweat, they end up as a sub-Runaways mess. While The Barracudas, DMZ and (especially on 'Boys Are Drinking') even The Gymslips put a new slant on old ideas and came up with something fresh and exciting, these ladies sound as bland as The Shirts or the Go-Go's. Despite a cover of 'Chinese Rocks' and producers including Chris Spedding, Craig Leon, Mick Jones and "Debra" Harry, this is just plain dull.
