The Ejected Punk Rock

The Ejected Punk Rock

Formed: Dagenham, London, England, UKThe Ejected Dagenham Punk

These knockabout punksters from Dagenham (a suburb of London) epitomized everything that was predictable about British punk in the early '80s – leather jackets, songs about beer, a scampering rhythm section, basic guitar shapes, mindless tunes – but still managed one absolute smasher: the title track of their debut EP Have You Got 10p?, a tribute to the scrounging plea favoured by pissed-up punks outside venues, which is funny and catchy:

HAVE YOU GOT 10P?

See you down the social getting your dole
You're a real scrounger, you're a real arsehole
See you in the city down the Marquee
Going up to people, now you're coming up to me

"Have you got 10p?" "Have you got 10p?"
"Have you got 10p?" "No, not me!"

Blond spiky hair, bondage stridesThe Ejected Have You Got 10p? Label
You got no class. You ain't got no pride.
See you in the city standing with a mate.
10p a person. It's the going rate.

They evolved out Dawn Patrol, a band named after their lead singer Dawn Payne. The Ejected contributed a couple of pretty good tracks ('East End Kids', 'What Am I Gonna Do?') to the Carry On Oi! compilation before signing to Riot City and releasing Have You Got 10p?, a firm favourite amongst punks with a sense of humour. The first song on the B-Side, 'Class Of 82', wasn't too shabby either, with a memorable chorus. It certainly warranted its Top 30 Indie status, which is more than be said for their subsequent releases, which were either inadvertently funny or just plain crap and boring.

A Touch Of Class was one of the very worst UK punk albums (amongst stiff competition), the Nicky Garratt-produced The Spirit Of Rebellion not much better.

The Best of The Ejected includes five previously unreleased songs, which are worth hearing if you have been declared clinically insane due to fifteen years of glue-sniffing.
