IAN BIRCH, SMASH HITS, MAY 28 - JUNE 10, 1981: One record that dodges all categories is 'Going For Gold' by the excellent Girls At Our Best. Imagine the Ramones bumping into the Gang of Four and Girlschool while at a late-night screening of old Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns, and you'll see how special they are. They combine invention with energy, atmosphere and the kind of deft humour that rhymes cars with Mars, pop stars and guitars. That can't be bad in anyone's books.
