S.O.A.

AKA: STATE OF ALERT

Formed: Washington DC, USA

Early DC hardcore band notable for featuring Henry Rollins (then known as Henry Garfield) and future members of other local groups, but not their music, which was nothing special: just basic thrash, like a poor man's Minor Threat, with no hooks or character. Which doesn't mean it's not enjoyable, because it is. Their first gig was in December 1980, their last in July 1981, supporting Black Flag in Philadelphia, That show ended in a famous riot, with local rednecks beating up punk kids with baseball bats. By the end of July, Garfield had become Rollins and was Black Flag's new mouthpiece. Bassist Wendel Blow, guitarist Michael Hampton and drummer Ivor Hanson later formed The Faith and then Embrace. Blow appeared with Iron Cross and Lethal Intent.
