Reviews & Opinions
PUNKY GIBBON: Unlike fellow first-wavers like Slaughter & The Dogs (for instance), in Tim 'T.V.' Smith The Adverts had a singer/songwriter whose incisive wit and intelligence made him an estimable and funny commentator on the burgeoning scene. This debut single is the proof. The music is ramalama punk, with a jerky edge that only true amateurism can bring, but the energy is totally infectious and both sides rattle along at a cracking pace. The A-Side was subsequently re-recorded for the Crossing the Red Sea With The Adverts.
DANNY BAKER, SNIFFIN' GLUE #10, June 1977: I really like The Adverts (Gary Gilmore's Eyes is classic), as ever the drums and bass way up front, for a group who (all join in on this cliche) - you either love or hate. Great track, 'specially the lyrics, but will do lousy business as a single, great B side ennall.
Additional Notes
The A-Side is listed in typical Stiff fashion as clocking in at 1:99, the B-Side 2 Hours 49 Minutes. The back cover lists the tracks as "One Chord Wonder" and "Quickstep". Larry Wallis is actually Pink Fairy Larry Wallis.
