Reviews & Opinions
PUNKY GIBBON: A 15-minute quickie recorded before they began adopting heavy metal motifs. (OK there's a tiny amount of metal in the odd solo, but that's probably just as much a Discharge influence.) The "songs" are indistinguishable from each other: mostly it's a psychotically fast blur of hoarse vocals, ragged guitars and blasting drums, but they mix things up with the occasional "mosh" section, perfect for their fans to do their funny circular dances. While the playing and production is also much better than the United Blood EP, what's most notable is the lyrics on 'Fascist Attitudes', which calls for an end to them. All told, this is incendiary: a repeated kick in the face that, once it's got you on the floor, keeps on stamping. Hard.
TIM YOHANNAN, MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL #17, SEPTEMBER 1984: There is one song on this extremely hot-sounding thrash album that attacks in-scene violence and bashing as the Nazi activity it is ("Fascist Attitudes"). Great! But unfortunately, much of the narrow- mindedness, fanatical nationalism, and violence that has destroyed the New York punk scene seems to have revolved around AGNOSTIC FRONT. Is it too little, too late? I hope not, but I'm approaching this band with caution.
IRA ROBBINS, THE TROUSER PRESS RECORD GUIDE, 1991: This pioneering skinhead outfit which has been on the New York hardcore scene since the early '80s debuted (following a 1982 EP entitled United Blood) with an album of standard-issue punk, fast and blurry, but not absurdly so and well-intentioned, if simple-minded, lyrics about unity, authority and justice. Roger Miret is an adequate run-of-the-mill shouter; like him, little about Victim in Pain, beyond its embossed all-black cover, is especially distinguished.
ALL MUSIC GUDIE: ...the ultimate document of the New York hardcore scene - an early-'80s movement which coincided with some of the most dire social and political crises ever to afflict the metropolis. By taking the rudiments of punk, then injecting enough energy and rage to elevate them to an entirely new level of primal aggression, Agnostic Front's piece de resistance ultimately succeeds because it transcends musical art form to create protest rock not necessarily at its most lucid, but definitely at its most visceral.
