Reviews & Opinions

PUNKY GIBBON: Mainly a stale affair this, with largely uninspired songs (side two is a tune desert) and an insufferably loud snare drum. However, while generally clumsy, there’s a few good numbers: the acoustic 'Four Grey Walls' is a tear-inducing ode to institutionalised living, while 'I Wanna Knighthood' and 'I Don’t Wanna Fight The Soviet' address serious topics with a sense of humour. Funny version of Kenny Rogers' 'Ruby', too. The CD version adds live material recorded at the ‘Main Event’ gig in 1988, which ended in a riot.

IRA ROBBINS, THE TROUSER PRESS RECORD GUIDE, 1991: The picture of Mensi on the back cover of Blood on the Terraces (the title track is about football hooliganism) shows him smiling and short-haired (not crew-cut) in a Nike T-shirt, looking for all the world like a cheerful suburban brother-in-law. Typical of the increasingly diverse and intelligent quartet (which here includes Splodgenessabounds' Max Splodge on drums), the album includes a reggae tune ("It's Your Life"), a punked-out Mel Tiilis cover ("Ruby"), a rejection of cold war mythology ("I Don't Wanna Fight the Soviet") and a touching prison drama ("Four Grey Walls").

This was also issued in 1991 as a CD twofer with Lost And Found (here).
