Reviews & Opinions
RECORD COLLECTOR: Though always a big Angelic Upstarts fan, at the risk of heresy, is this writer the only one that thought their debut single, The Murder Of Liddle Towers, was, dull, plodding R&B, with only Mensi’s impassioned vocal delivery and message to redeem it? Ah well… On the other hand, the fact that said single was released on their own Dead Records imprint does at least give this collection a smattering of the band’s early years. All the Upstarts’ chart-troubling albums and singles were released during their terms with major labels Warner Bros and EMI/Zonophone, between April 1979 and September 1981. Three flop singles later, the band signed to Anagram. The EMI period was an embarrassment for all concerned, as the label made a frankly ludicrous decision to try to turn our erstwhile street punks into airbrushed pop stars. Thank goodness that, when Anagram picked the band up, they went back to what they knew best: putting the world to rights lyrically, and pumping out melodically adept punk toons.Additional Notes
Get Back reissued this as a double LP in 2006 (GET 153) with the same track listing as the original CD, with different cover art. Radiation Reissues trotted out the same reissue in 2018 (RRS87), with yet another sleeve.
