Reviews & Opinions
DEANNE PEARSON, SMASH HITS, 24TH JULY, 1980: I was in a good frame of mind, I really was, after listening to Toots [and the Maytalls], but I'm plunged into instant depression and painful nostalgia by this squalid mess of sound, raucous, shouting, vicious voices and matching instrumentation. It's a little more subdued than usual Upstarts platter, but that thankfully makes it all the easier to forget.
SOUNDS, JULY 1980: Guts, Tune, Drive, Something to say, 'Another Soldier' is perfect punk...the song could be your epitaph, your brothers, the kid down the roads. It's about Britain's forgotten sons, the working class Joe Does so demoralised and dragged down by the dole and the dead end drudgery of Thatcher's Holiday Camp that they end up enlisting in a job 'with a future' only to get blown away in someone else's war.
PUNKY GIBBON: This could easily have been a Stiff Little Fingers record, it really is that good.Additional Notes
Track 1 later re-recorded for 2,000,000 Voices.
