Reviews & Opinions

PUNKY GIBBON: A double set touching on a wide range of styles - rockabilly, reggae, punk, R n B, ska, soul etc - it somehow manages to be an entirely coherent affair. 'London Calling' itself is a powerful piece of protest with a throbbing bass-line and apocalyptic visions of London being flooded, 'The Right Profile' examines the demise of Montgomery Clift, and the damning reggae rumble of 'The Guns Of Brixton' shows Simonon to be as gifted a writer as either Strummer or Jones (but a much worse singer!). A classic, of course.

SHANE BALDWIN, RECORD COLLECTOR, 2004: The Clash's third album, London Calling was a sprawling, eclectic double set, somewhat at odds with punk's more traditional ethos, but once the shock had worn off it was clear that the band was still burning with their own fury and passion - just a little more inventive.
