Reviews & Opinions
PUNKY GIBBON: With now more than two good(ish) songs, there's no need to buy this weak LP, unless you want to hear their cover of 'First I Look At The Purse' and a slew of filler items that dip into the well of Dr Feelgood and 60s R'n'B without generating any sparks. 'Ask Mr Waverley' - a witty ode to infertility wherein the protagonist asks the Man From UNCLE boss for advice - sounds like a forerunner to the sort of thing The Members later honed to perfection, and is the standout track.
ALL MUSIC GUIDE: True Romances sounds more befitting of a bunch of middle-aged pub rockers than five teenage punk rockers.
RONNIE GURR, SOUNDS, 1978: True Romances is, to these cynical ears, a suprisingly good platter indeed. It shows that The Cortinas have grown up and that their music is maturing with them. A pleasant surprise and well worth the investment, if not financial, than aural.
JOHN HAMBLETT, NME, 1978: The musicanship is not uncommonly high, but it is acceptably competent....we must presume that they will grow into fine young musicians...either that or Oxford Dons.
