Reviews & Opinions

PUNKY GIBBON: Another jokey single. The band have a Cockney knees up down the old rub-a-dub with a joanna. "Birds put the turd in custard, but who put the shit in Number 10?" they opine. The record comes appropriately enough on brown vinyl (or black). For those too young to understand, "Dennis the barman" is a reference to Thatcher's pisshead husband, while Tim Eggar was the wretched Tory MP who took the band to task over How Does It Feel and came a cropper.

RUTH SCHWARTZ, MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL #8, SEPTEMBER 1983: This is more of a novelty record than a punk record per se. The song gets to the core of British life, both thematically and structurally, since it's in the form of a rousing pub singalong, but it's also about looking at ourselves as being responsible for the officials we elect, not just pointing the finger at them later. CRASS may be serious, but here they display their anger in a humorous format. Americans may find it a bit inaccessible, but if you know that "#10" is the residence of the Prime Minister and that "Birds" is akin to Jello, you should get the point and have a laugh besides. [Punky Gibbon note: I think Ruth should have written "Custard" is akin to Jello".]

Additional Notes

Black or brown vinyl.
