Reviews & Opinions
RECORD COLLECTOR, 1994 [partial review - I lost the other half]: "San Francisco's first and only rock and roll band"? Maybe so, if rock and roll history begins in 1976, when Crime were just about the first American punk to have a single (briefly) in the shops. 'Hot Wire My Heart' was followed by the ultra-collectable 'Murder By Guitar'/'Frustration'; but Crime never managed to transfer their Stooges-fired punk thrash onto an album. 'San Francisco's Doomed' combines two live-in-the-studio sessions from January 1978 and July 1979. Bizarrely, it's the latter date that displays their Iggy debut most clearly; at the start of '78, they were simply a great punk band, who'd wiped the deck of all influences beyond the need to 'Piss On Your Dog'. Both sides of the 'Murder' single get a trashing - the A-side staring out with such a leaden crawl through the punk chord changes that it might quality as the first punk hardcore record. Elliott Mazer produced that low-fi first session; he also produced Neil Young's 'Harvest' [and if anyone has the rest of this review, please email me!]Additional Notes
Reissued as San Francisco's Still Doomed.
