Reviews & Opinions
PUNKY GIBBON: The first of two fascinating archival compilations, this (and its follow up, Hardcore Devo Vol. 2 74-77) collect many (but not all) of the recordings Devo did in the years leading up to their first single. Both are pure, undiluted Devo; after all, they were recorded on a 4-track in basement with no outside interference. The result is two incredibly strange and wildly entertaining documents of a band which obviously hit the ground running: they never really changed for punk, outside of adding more guitar and speeding up a bit. Without any specific recording dates, one can use this criterion to guess which are the most recent recordings. This first installment is better than the second, with embryonic versions of 'Jocko Homo’, 'Soo Bawls’ and 'Social Fools’ along with previously unheard classics likes 'I’m A Potato (And I’m So Hip)', 'Uglatto' and 'Auto Modown / Space Girl Blues'. Curiously, 'Satisfaction’ and 'Mongoloid’ are exactly the same recordings from their first and second singles, whilst 'Mechanical Man' is the same recording that was bootlegged in 1978 on the Mechanical Man EP.
Additional Notes
The first US CD is titled 'Hardcore Vol 1' on the spine, 'Hardcore Volume I' on the disc, and 'Hardcore Devo, Volume 1' on the back cover. The French LP is simply titled 'Hard Core Devo'. The French CD is listed here because it was widely available in the UK.
