Reviews & Opinions

PUNKY GIBBON: ROIR’s tape-only R.I.P. features liner notes from Hell himself (under his real name Lester Meyers), suggesting he is to bow out of making music for good. Drawing on demos and unreleased studio recordings from his time with The Heartbreakers (‘Hurt Me’, ‘Love Comes In Spurts’, ‘Can’t Keep My Eyes On You,’ all from 1975) and several incarnations of the Voidoids (1977, 1979 and 1983), the sound is often ropy and the saxophone on the last four songs gets a bit much, but what’s here warrants a listen, especially as eight of the 14 tracks were never recorded properly by Hell. The three Heartbreakers-with-Hell songs are especially biting, despite the wobbly tape recorder sound quality, making one conclude that Thunders was indeed a complete dunderhead for evicting Hell. These three offer irrefutable proof that the Sex Pistols were not the first band to come up with a true punk sound.
