Reviews & Opinions

CHAINSAW, JUNE 1978: "Tension and unrest, cos that panic button has been pressed!" Well, this is the first album from those Croydon loonies and it's bloody great. It starts off with 'V.D. Boiler' or 'Mystery Track', depending on where the needle lands. 'V.D. Boiler' is a typical Johnny Moped song - the 'Mystery Track' is just weird noises (Can you find the VD Boiler?) You usually get the Mystery Track, it took me five tries to get VD Boiler. Next track is 'Panic Button; - that's really good, it's fast and furious and manic. 'Little Queenie', a Chuck Berry song is next and it's the one song on the album I could have done without. Johnny Moped sings falsetto and it just goes on too long. Also on side one are 'Maniac' - a Slimey Toad song (the Toad songs on this are usually better than the rest), the single 'Darling, Let's Have Another Baby' (it's a different version from the single - it's much better on the single, on this version Johnny sings out of tune, and 'Groovy Ruby', co-written by Captain Sensible. On side two, there are three Toad songs - 'Wee Wee', 'Make Trouble; and the B-side of their first single 'Incendiary Device'. Also, there's a really old song (I think) '3D Time' which is almost a psychedelic song - it's even got an echo. There's also 'Hell Razor' and 'Wild Breed' (Johnny wants to chop your willy off - Slimey Toad hasn't got one!). well as Jon Savage would say, this is a "bleedin' beaut". That is, it's very, very good! ****1/2

Additional Notes

'Mystery Track' is actually double-grooved: get the needle to hit the disc at the right spot and instead of 'V.D. Boiler' you get 'Mystery Track'. The CD comes in a cheapo-looking replica card cover.
