Reviews & Opinions

PENNY BLACK MUSIC: 999 may not be doing anything very much very new or which they haven't done before, but, rather like going back to your old school many years on, and finding several of your old teachers still there, there is something very comforting about ‘Death in Soho’ in its routine and familiarity.

SHANE BALDWIN, RECORD COLLECTOR, DEC. 2007: There can’t be many 1976 UK punk bands extant that have never split and still boast three original members; in fact, only The Stranglers spring to mind. Singer/guitarist Nick Cash, guitarist Guy Days and drummer Pablo Labritain have been aided by the bass-playing talents of Lurker Arturo Bassick for so long now that he’s hardly a new boy, and that familiarity and cohesion can only have helped on this, the band’s first new album in nine years. Engineered by former Vibrators bassist Pat Collier at Perry Vale Studios, Death In Soho does a quite impressive job of capturing the long-established 999 sound: chugging, clipped riffs, solid drumming, and Cash’s trademark shrill vocals. To be honest, as far as material goes there’s not much here that the band couldn't have come up with 30 years ago, but the production is excellent, the delivery punchy as all hell, and there are no signs here of a bunch of old school punks just going through the motions.

ROBERT COLLINS, CLASSIC ROCK, NOV 2007: For all its roguish pugnacity, Death In Soho is a dreadful record. Somehow sidestepping the centuries of musical experience, 999 come over like a bunch of secondary school pupils making their first forays into punk rock, tracks with puny vocals, hopelessly predictable lyrics, and the few guitar lines with potential obscured by songwriting.
