Reviews & Opinions

STEVE TAYLOR, SMASH HITS, OCTOBER 16 - 29, 1980: Not so much a song, more an impeccable rock and roll backing track.

PUNKY GIBBON: The band's second single presents us with five five covers, no less. Two of the covers are paper: you can choose from a glossy poster sleeve (nice) and a normal sleeve (also nice, but less so). The other three covers are contained within the wax. First, the B-Sides: I never much liked the rock 'n' roll standard 'Baby I Don't Care' and this reverential, workmanlike version does nothing to change that. 'White Light White Heat' isn't much better, but I like the original, so its got a headstart, but it still doesn't get moving. Now, the A-Side: Covering a song by the Avengers is cool, but changing the lyrics (to something much worse) and claiming it's an original is not. Having said that, it's a cracking recording that I played to death in 1980 and still play to death now.
