Reviews & Opinions
SAINTS.COM: Out In The Jungle from 1982 has maybe the most complicated release history of all Saints records. It first came out on New Rose, and then in 1983 was released on the UK label Flicknife with a different sleeve, accompanied by the "Follow The Leader" single. In Australia, it got issued under the name Casablanca, which was one of the tracks on the record. But here it gets real confusing, since New Rose also released an album called Casablanca, but while it's the same songs, it's not the same takes. And in the midst of all this, Bailey went back to Australia again for a period that eventually led to him releasing a solo live record called What We Did On Our Holidays. Out In The Jungle is really a confused jumble of songs:the horn driven "Follow The Leader" is pretty strong, but there are tracks like "Senile Dementia" which are disjointed noise. "Curtains" is a really nice soulful song that builds up into a nifty Stax/Volt sort of horn chart, and "Come On" has an almost ZZ Top kind of rhythm drive to it.
STEVE SPINALI, MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL #5, MARCH/APRIL 1983: The SAINTS' current album is bound to be a disappointment to some and a surprise to all. The mid- to slow-tempo numbers use acoustic guitars and even brass section at times, and the slick recording actually does justice to solid compositions like "Follow the Leader" and "Curtains." Quite frankly, though, Out in the Jungle qualifies as nothing more than competent light rock--nowhere near past triumphs like "I'm Stranded."
Additional Notes
Originally issued in 1982 in Australia as "I Thought This Was Love, But This Ain't Casablanca". This has been reissued numerous times on CD but is best heard on The Greatest Cowboy Movie Never Made.
