Reviews & Opinions
PUNKY GIBBON: Historically important, this documents a benefit concert recorded in 1980 when Cornwell had been arrested for drugs possession and was serving time in a Pentonville Prison. A veritable gaggle of pop stars stand in for him, among them Toyah, Hazel O'Connor, Peter Hammill, Ian Dury and Richard Jobson. A slew of guest musicians (from The Cure, hawkwind, Blockheads, King Crimson and others) are also roped in. It's certainly intriguing to hear Jobbo singing Stranglers songs, but whatever atmosphere was evident at the time isn't captured here, and it all seems a bit weird.Additional Notes
A couple of noteworthy reissues: The 2002 edition Castle Music (06076-81156-2) has superior liner notes/packaging; the 1995 Hallmark edition (302902) omits several songs for no good reason. Previously bootlegged as A Night In London! and ...And Then They Were Three.
