Reviews & Opinions

PUNKY GIBBON: This is of interest solely to the fanatical. It includes three songs from a 1974 demo, proving that they truly did start out as soft-rockers. I defy anyone to sit through 'Wasted' or 'My Young Dreams' without asking, is this the same band, and what is this shit? A live recording of 'Princess Of The Streets' from 1975 isn't much better, but is of interest as being the earliest live recording of the band. Three songs from a 1976 demo and a concert recording of a 1976 vintage taken from their support slot on Patti Smith's first UK tour are better, but none of this is essential. Throughout, the sound is pretty cruddy (the 1974 demos are lifted directly from the 3 Early Demos bootleg).

RECORD COLLECTOR, 1992: This 16-track compilation brings to light a number of Stranglers curious from between 1974 and 1976, when the band were honing their idiosyncratic rock sound. [Read full review here]
