Formed: Cardiff, Wales, UK

This wacky, wonderful band of the messthetic variety began life in 1972 as Do You Want This Table. For the first four years of its existence The Table rarely gigged (boasting they owned no instruments), but come 1977 became an appealing and entertaining live act, allegedly upstaging everyone it supported. Virgin signed the band in 1977, the same year they signed the equally weird Avant Gardener. Maybe they thought they were the birth of a new genre.

They weren't.

Record-wise only two Table vinyl releases ever crept out: Do The Standing Still (Classics Illustrated) is brilliantly noisy and quirky, suggesting a less-energetic alternative to the pogo, over a ceaseless barrage of abrasively jangled guitars. Sex Cells is about how school girls are only sexy once the person who observed them has left school.
