Formed: Ladbroke Grove, London, England, UK
Nowadays, when Ladbroke Grove’s Warsaw Pakt ever get mentioned it’s usually in Joy Division biographies (JD's first recordings were as Warsaw). Yet, back in 1977 Warsaw Pakt caused quite a stir on their own for making the quickest album in history. From the start of recording to its arrival on the shelves of record stores (in a brown mailing envelope), Needle Time! took less than 24 hours! Unfortunately, the very notion negates qualities like decent production. The song titles are promising if you're after third division punk (‘Nosebleed’ and 'Sick & Tired' for instance) and that's what it delivers, but in terms of quality it's close to the top of the that division and it's pretty entertaining stuff which grows on me on every listen. The accompanying inner sheet outlining the timetable for the record’s production is interesting, as is the band’s lineage. Their guitarist was Andy Colqhoun, formerly of Mick Farren’s Deviants and shortly after the Pakt split he became a quarter of Tanz Der Youth, and had also been a Pink Fairy. Drummer Lucas Fox, meanwhile, had briefly played in Motorhead.
